"We are at Shine, on the first day, " says Pattie, when, as the youngest member of the group, she is given the honor of naming the new settlement. Refugees from the dying planet Earth, they, along with other ships, have been sent into space in the hope that some of them will survive to continue the human race. But the success of Shine remains doubtful as crops fail and provisions brought from Earth dwindle. Even the excitement surrounding the hatching of the giant moth people from the "boulders" in Boulder Valley doesn't make the group forget the hopelessness of the situation. It isn't until Pattie and her sister Sarah make an important discovery that survival becomes a certainty.

Mother Goose for Grownups (Dodo Press)

Mother Goose for Grownups (Dodo Press) Review

Guy Wetmore Carryl (1873-1904) was an American humorist and poet. When he was only 20 years old he had his first article published in The New York Times. During his college years he had written plays for amateur performances. After graduation, in 1896 he became a staff writer for Munsey’s Magazine under Frank Munsey and he was later promoted to managing editor of the magazine. Later he went to work for Harper’s Magazine and was sent to Paris. While in Paris he wrote for Life, Outing, Munsey’s, and Collier’s, as well as his own independent writings. Some of Carryl’s more well-known works were his humorous poems that were parodies of Aesop’s Fables, such as The Sycophantic Fox and the Gullible Raven and of Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes, such as The Embarrassing Episode of Little Miss Muffet, poems which are still popular today. He also wrote a number of humorous parodies of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, such as How Little Red Riding Hood Came To Be Eaten and How Fair Cinderella Disposed of Her Shoe. His humorous poems usually ended with a pun on the words used in the moral of the story.

Despair. Emotional isolation. Self-loathing. Immaturity. Abusive actions. These are just some of the damaging fragments that remain embedded within our personalities, behaviors, and souls when we are broken as children. The memory of the past may seem distant and clouded, but within its scars deep wounds remain that continue to inflict pain upon our adult lives--and often end up spilling into the lives of others. In Broken Children, Grown-Up Pain, Paul Hegstrom, author of Angry Men and the Women Who Love Them, shows us the scars from his broken childhood and shares practical and proven methods for facing and dealing with the pain of the past. By using scientific research, psychological studies, and biblical principles--especially those found in the Jewish model of raising children--he points us to the place of healing where we are finally free to pursue authentic relationships and build healthy emotional intimacy with others. This updated version of Broken Children, Grown-Up Pain is an excellent resource for pastors, teachers, counselors, psychologists, parents, or anyone wounded by an abusive past.

Glamour Job: A Fairy-Tale for Grown-ups

Glamour Job: A Fairy-Tale for Grown-ups Review

Goblins and the Jewish American Princess. Chicago model, Laurie Morgan was about to turn 30. She divorces her husband, thinking she could do better. She's been known to sneak drags off her American Spirit Menthols while talking on the phone with relatives who think she's quit smoking. While ordering organic vegetarian cuisine with her friend Lizzie, she asks if a change of hair color from red to blonde would spice up her career. Though she didn't realize it, this would be the last ordinary lunch she'd ever have and Laurie's life as she knew it would soon be ripped apart. A trail of mysterious photographs left by a half-sized twin of herself leads Laurie into a frightening world where you'll find the denizens of strip clubs, neo-nazis and drag queens sharing the stage with fairy- tale creatures living hidden amongst us. Now behind her prison bars, Laurie doesn't look like herself anymore. She's been labeled a crazy killer and a domestic terrorist. No one believes her strange tale of goblins, unseen observants, and dragon-folk. No one believes she's the real Laurie Morgan. In this irreverent, dark, urban fantasy the masks of our society are torn away to expose a strange new world where malevolent, little creatures pull the strings of our lives and nothing is as it seems. Satirical, wicked and a wild ride.

Grown-Up Marriage: What We Know, Wish We Had Known, and Still Need to Know About Being Married

In Grown-Up Marriage, bestselling author Judith Viorst uses her abundant gifts to consider how marriage pulls, cajoles, and commands us to grow up. By viewing marriage "as a problem we have to solve again and again," Viorst offers a fresh view of both the mirages of marriage and how readers can adjust their expectations to create an enduring state of the union. Complacency, warns Viorst, is the bind that unties. "If we imagine that marriage is where we can burp, bitch, snicker and snipe day after day without paying a price, we are wrong." She crafts a smart synthesis of decades of psychological research, case studies, and examples drawn from popular culture. Viorst rounds up the usual suspects--the routines that kill marriage, the outlaw in-laws, the mommy-daddy trap--and the unusual ones, including marital sibling rivalry and why second marriages often fail. Each subject is illuminated with nuanced, mirthful details about creating a mature marriage. Her insights are sometimes diluted with too many expert quotes or her own poetry. Still, her shrewd observations will make this book required reading before your next anniversary. --Barbara Mackoff Although marriage is for grown-ups, very few of us are grown up when we marry. Here, the bestselling author of Suddenly Sixty and Necessary Losses presents her life-affirming perspective on the joys, heartaches, difficulties, and possibilities of a grown-up marriage -- and no, that's not an oxymoron!

Featuring interviews with married women and men, the findings of couples therapists, the truths offered by literature and movies, and a bemused exploration of her own marriage, Judith Viorst illuminates the issues couples struggle with from "I do" through "till death do us part." Examining marital rivalry, marital manners, marital sex (extramarital, too), marital fighting and apologies, what kids do for (and to) marriage, and the boredom and bliss of everyday married life, Viorst leaves no marital stone unturned. From the early years when we wonder "Who is this person?" and "What am I doing here?" to the realities of divorce, remarriage, and growing older (and old) together, Viorst offers insights and advice with honesty, humanity, and humor -- all the while recognizing how tough it is to be married and, when it works, how very precious it can be.

The Little Grownup: A Nostalgic Michigan Boyhood

The Little Grownup: A Nostalgic Michigan Boyhood Review

Born in 1964, Hans "Jeff" Borger made it in on the tail end of the baby boomers. "The Little Grownup" is a nostalgic look back at his Michigan boyhood. From growing up in Detroit to the subsequent move to the suburbs, Hans lovingly and humorously writes about his German immigrant parents and grandparents and his youth. School fads. His first job as a paperboy. Trips to the grandparents house. Dance and music lessons. Meeting his TV idol Desi Arnaz. Family vacations to Northern Michigan. Those creepy basements. And even a mention of the end of the American icon "the milk man." Never taking himself too seriously, Hans captures the spirit of growing up in the 1960s and 1970s with his delightful reminiscing. He may have been young then, but he always felt he was born "The Little Grownup."

Whether it's musical talent, criminal tendencies, or fashion sense, we humans want to know why we have it or why we don't. What makes us the way we are? Maybe it's in our genes, maybe it's how we were raised, maybe it's a little of both--in any case, Mom and Dad usually receive both the credit and the blame. But not so fast, says developmental psychology writer Judith Rich Harris. While it has been shown that genetics is only partly responsible for behavior, it is also true, Harris asserts, that parents play a very minor role in mental and emotional development. The Nurture Assumption explores the mountain of evidence pointing away from parents and toward peer groups as the strongest environmental influence on personality development. Rather than leaping into the nature vs. nurture fray, Harris instead posits nurture (parental) vs. nurture (peer group), and in her view your kid's friends win, hands down. This idea, difficult as it may be to accept, is supported by the countless studies Harris cites in her breezy, charming prose. She is upset about the blame laid on parents of troubled children and has much to say (mostly negative) about "professional parental advice-givers." Her own advice may be summarized as "guide your child's peer-group choices wisely," but the aim of the book is less to offer guidance than to tear off cultural blinders. Harris's ideas are so thought-provoking, challenging, and potentially controversial that anyone concerned with parenting issues will find The Nurture Assumption refreshing, important, and possibly life-changing. --Rob Lightner This groundbreaking book, a Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times notable pick, rattled the psychological establishment when it was first published in 1998 by claiming that parents have little impact on their children's development. In this tenth anniversary edition of The Nurture Assumption, Judith Harris has updated material throughout and provided a fresh introduction. Combining insights from psychology, sociology, anthropology, primatology, and evolutionary biology, she explains how and why the tendency of children to take cues from their peers works to their evolutionary advantage. This electrifying book explodes many of our unquestioned beliefs about children and parents and gives us a radically new view of childhood.

Much Bigger than Grownups: Chronicles of a Native South African

Much Bigger than Grownups: Chronicles of a Native South African Review

"This account shines with creativity and insight. Readers are taken on an international adventure into the rich cultures, religious diversity, lush geography and political turmoil of South Africa during the latter half of the twentieth century; and then on to the USA. It is a fascinating sojourn that enlightens and educates as it entertains. Exotic places and endearing people come vividly to life through the eyes and heart of this Renaissance woman." Dr. Melanie Rosa. *** "Shelley Wood Gauld combines her personal history with that of a turbulent country, facts about the environment she so loves, and profound insights into different spiritual paths she and others around her have trod. The book bears witness to someone who has striven to put more meaning into her life and more 'color on her wings'; and, thereby, more color into ours. Maps, artworks and vibrant authentic prose guide us through this memorable record of a life in progress." Prof. Dr. Lindy Stiebel.
